So, what is this double-cleanse method that has taken the world by a storm?
Before we understand what truly a double-cleanse is, we must understand the nature of the dirt that clings to our skin, and also what medium it dissolves in.
Dirt is often oil-soluble (meaning, dirt dissolves in oil). The ‘liquid’ your skin produces (sebum), the creams you apply to your skin, your SPF, etc. also contain a significant portion of oil in them. These ‘oily’ substances need substances of their own nature to shoo them off and not cause build-up. Why? Because –
Like dissolves like. Oil will dissolve in oil. Oil will dissolve away oil. An oil-based cleanser will dissolve into the nasties on your skin. Water will wash the mixture (as well as a few other water-soluble impurities) away.
Now that we’ve understood this much, we’re ready to take in the double-cleanse method:
Step 1: Use an oil-based cleanser to dissolve the oils, dirt and bacteria on your skin.
Step 2: Use a water-based cleanser to wash the mixture that results plus some water-soluble impurities away.
What about those who do not want to invest their time and money in two cleansing products?
No problem. Your water-based cleanser definitely would contain a surfactant (more on surfactants here) that would possess two heads – one water-loving and the other oil-loving – that would perform the dual role of solubilizing the oil-based impurity and also washing all the nasties away.
But, hey! Do give the double-cleanse a try at least once in your lifetime, okay?
In terms of efficacy, the double-cleanse method hands down works better as it targets different concerns very specifically and also takes care of very heavy, resistant makeup and overactive sebaceous glands. However, if you have less time on your hands, double-cleansing once a day only (night would be the best time if you’re opting for this solution) or not doing so at all would also work (if you don’t use much on your skin anyway). Whatever works personally for you. Observe how your skin reacts to certain changes you make to your routine and make according adjustments. For some, after they resort to the double-cleansing method, they notice their skin concerns start to immediately fade away. For others, it turns out only a so-so method.
Skincare can be quite like magic, isn’t it?
Let’s quickly run through a few of its very realistic benefits now:
– Gives your skin a thorough cleanse
– The above then allows other products to penetrate your skin better
– Is a gentle, non-stripping, non-damaging technique, provided you pick the right cleansers for your skin type
– Balances oil-production in your skin
– Suits all skin types (especially, oily skin)
That’s all you need to know for now! If you’re planning on starting with a double-cleanse routine, we’d suggest you start off with our aloe matcha cleansing balm along with our herbal cleanser. The two complement each other perfectly, and are suited for all skin types.
