What are they?
Antioxidants are substances that protect and shield the skin from external skin stressors. They are preventative PLUS curative.
What do they do?
Your skin’s health starts to deteriorate due to free radical damage, also known as oxidative stress (you can read more on the concepts here if you are interested). Antioxidants combat this effect, which, if not dealt with, can lead to hyperpigmentation, loss of collagen from the skin, acne, slower healing of scars, inflammation and in some cases, even skin cancer!
What are some examples?
– Vitamins (A, C, E, B3, etc.)
– Coenzyme Q10
– Plant oils and extracts contain polyphenols, flavonoids, isoflavones, anthocyanins, etc, that are potent antioxidants. Green tea can be classified as the best of best of them.
Note: It is not enough only to apply antioxidants topically to your skin. Your diet plays a huge role and must contain sufficient antioxidants to support overall skin health.
